IFHF to Build Center for Disabled Vets

Washington, D.C. - (July 28, 2005) Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Nicholson, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Senator John Warner (R-VA) and Surgeon General of the Army Lieutenant General Kevin C. Kiley today joined Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) and representatives of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) to announce a public-private partnership to build the Center for the Intrepid, the National Armed Forces Physical Rehabilitation Center, a state-of-the-art advanced training skills facility at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The announcement took place in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

"We are committed to building the $30 million Center for the Intrepid as quickly as possible to provide for the critical needs of America's wounded and disabled military personnel," said Arnold Fisher, Honorary Chairman of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. "100% of contributions from the public will go directly towards the construction of the Center for the Intrepid. No administrative costs will be deducted."

"Since 2001, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund has provided over $14 million to the families of military personnel lost in Iraq and Afghanistan to help them through immediate financial needs resulting from their tragic loss," said Richard Santulli, Chairman of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. "With the passage of new legislation increasing government support to these families, the IFHF will now shift its support from direct grants to the creation of the new Center for the Intrepid."

To date, over 15,000 troops have been wounded in U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although most of these men and women are treated and ultimately return to duty, some suffer injuries so severe that they require extensive medical care, years of treatment, and specialized rehabilitation. The Center for the Intrepid will serve the needs of these catastrophically disabled military personnel.

The new 60,000 square foot Center will provide those with severe extremity injuries and amputees the best opportunity to regain their ability to live and work productively. It will provide space for clinical research and therapy to improve prosthetic designs and it will free up existing hospital space currently used for amputee patient care to be instead used by other sick and injured service members, family members and retirees.

The Center will also include a Children's Support Space to help children understand and manage the difficulties associated with their parent's condition and treatment as well as help with child care needs of families being served by the Center.

The planning and execution of the Center is being managed in cooperation with the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Secretary of the Army, and the Surgeons General of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, who are responsible for the medical care of all members of the military community.
