Hero Stories for July 2008

My son, my hero. SFC Collin J. Bowen

My son was SFC Collin J. Bowen. He was injured on 1/2/08 and died of his injuries on 3/14/08. He was the toughest kid I know. He loved the military. He only had some 22 days left in country when a friend fo his asked if he would drive the Humvee on another mission. Collin's character was such that he couldn't say no. The mission was completed and they had stop just over 2 miles from the base to celebrate the completed successful mission. They were sitting in the vehicle smoking cuban cigars w...

Aug. 20th Honor Flight Northwestern Ohio

On Aug. 20th Honor Flight Northwestern Ohio will have another flight from Toledo to Washington, so our WWII Veterans can see their Memorial.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think almost everything will be the same as the other flights.  Help is needed early in the morning (starting at 4:00 am) decorating the Grand Aire hanger.  After that the Veterans will start to arrive, and help will be needed to get everyone registered/checked in and ready to go. The flight will depart around 8:30-9:00 am The P...

My Hero, Darrel Kasson.

I am writing to tell you about my son Darrel Kasson. He was very loved by everyone in his unit. He always was the first to volunteer were ever he was needed. He wanted to be with his men and not behind a desk. When they went out to escort the convoy he always wanted to be in the lead vehicle and almost always in the drivers seat. He spent many hours working on the vehicles and building  they called the house. He worked at the Arizona State Prison in Florence Arizona and was looking forward to...

My Hero, Sgt Joel W Lewis

Joel was a 6'6" gentle giant of a man.  He had a wonderful smile that would light up a room. He was very adventuresome and loved to scuba dive, sky dive, play basketball and hockey.  He loved animals especially cats and had 5!  He had a great sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes and goof around. The guys in his unit all commented on the fact he greatly improved morale when he joined  them.  One of the guys called him "Louie " as in Louie Anderson. Joel was originally from Ontario...
